Pre-School and Kindergarten
Pre-school at St. Leo's is a child's first "personal space" outside the context of family. Their space should be alive with activities designed to
develop cognitive and language skills, math readiness, music and rhythm,
fine and gross motor skills, and awareness of their environment.
A gym area used for both exercising and music/dance increases their
strength and agility while improving social skills, teamwork, focus and
listening skills, as well as poise and confidence.
St. Leo's also offers a full day Kindergarten program. Our teachers
recognize that each child has an individual learning style. As such, we have
adopted a curriculum that accommodates multiple learning styles. The
Kindergarten program includes literacy, self-expression, mathematical
concepts and the cast of characters (both animal and human) in the world
beyond their homes.
Grades 1 and 2
In these grades, efforts focus on developing skills in vocabulary,
comprehension, and writing. Children are exposed to diverse literary
genres, focusing on books that have won the Caldecott award. Mathematics
teaching focuses on mastering mechanics to improve problem solving.
Geometry concepts, graphing, and time calculations are utilized.
Students learn basic principles of physics via hands on activities.
Recognition of communities with similarities and differences from their own
are explored and basic democratic values are introduced.
During the Early Childhood grades, students acquire primary technology
skills in our Computer Lab. They learn to find, enter, and record
information as well as to interact with educational games.
Our Early Childhood Fine Arts program, which involves active learning in our
Art and Music rooms, now has an added "movement " component that
includes yoga, dance, and tumbling to engage the brains, bodies, spirits and
hearts of our young students.
