Middle School: Grades 6-8

The students' learning becomes increasingly research-based as they prepare to be 21st Century scholars. Their writing will expand to journals, narratives, and poetry with peer reviewing and editing. Grammar and mechanics of writing will be addressed within the context of written work. Critical thinking skills will be developed to interpret both fiction and non-fiction. Self-sufficiency will be promoted in preparation for expectations in high school.

Students conduct experiments in the Science Lab in life sciences and physics, addressing topics such as microscopic life, matter, sound, light, machines, and energy. Written reports require explanations of purpose, method, observations (data collection), results, and conclusions.

Students in middle school become familiar with the makeup, industry, and government of Europe, Latin America and Canada. American History is studied from the Native American civilizations through the American Revolution to the Civil War and subsequent reconstruction. Students have access to the Computer Lab and Library for preparation of reports and class presentations.

Mathematics is increasingly directed to problem solving with an emphasis on multiple strategies for solution. Decimals, percents, ratios, measurement, probability, pre-algebraic concepts, mental computation and calculator use will be incorporated. There is an opportunity to participate in Advanced Mathematics in grades 6-8, based on Terranova scores in the previous grade, and teacher recommendation. Students are re-evaluated for participation each year. The 8th grade Advanced mathematics is taught as a High School Algebra I course of study. Many Algebra students participate in the Christian Brothers Academy Math Contest.

In the middle school significant attention is given to teen issues: peer influence, responsibility to avoid smoking, alcohol and dietary extremes. Comfort and confidence in one's sexuality is nurtured. Specifics of reproduction and behaviors are addressed in the Family Life program with parental involvement.
